TRAINING REPORT ON SOCIAL SKILLS DEVELOPMENT IN AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

On the 12th of May, 2017, Patrick Speech and Languages Centre in partnership with Pure Souls Learning Foundation held a one-day training on Social Skills as part of a series of monthly trainings on Management of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Other Related Developmental Disorders.

The purpose of this training was to help parents learn various practical and functional techniques of building the needed social skills for their children on the spectrum, to function well outside their comfort zone, and also help them to be more aware of themselves and their immediate environment.

This training was Anchored by Mrs. Aanu Senbanjo, a trained clinical psychologist.

There was also team work modeled to parents on how to assist their children overcome social skill difficulties, and how to take turns. Another social skill activity demonstrated, was a video clips on how to encourage circle time at home. Parents were given the opportunity to ask questions, and answers were provided with examples mostly by the chief host: Mrs. Dotun Akande.

The training came to an end at1.30pm with16 parents in attendance. We have moved our next training to the weekend so as to give more opportunity to working parents.
